People have argued for more than a century and a half about what caused the Civil War. Was it slavery? State rights? Tariffs? Does history give any definitive answer to such questions? It does. If you want to find out what a fight was about, you need to look at what happened just before the fight started. If you want to know what the Civil War was about, you need to consider the disputes of the 1850s, as the nation's political culture spiraled toward the abyss of Civil War. This lecture will give a fast-paced account of the conflicts of the 1850s with analysis of what they can tell us about the causes of the war.
